Upon its release on the 3DS eShop, Mighty Switch Force! garnered positive reviews, mainly praising the game’s gorgeous visuals, fantastic soundtrack, and the fun but difficult puzzle/platforming gameplay. The game was successful enough for developer WayForward Technologies to announce Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition, an enhanced version of the game, for the Wii U. Whether you’ve played through the original 3DS version, or you would like to catch criminals as protagonist Patricia Wagon for the first time, Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition is a game you should definitely consider checking out on the Wii U eShop.
Duke previously reviewed Mighty Switch Force! on the 3DS. If you haven’t read that review yet, definitely check it out. Much of the points made in his review still stand for the Wii U edition of the game. However, the Wii U version does have some differences from the original one.
First off, the visuals in the game are remastered in high-definition. The graphics on the 3DS version were gorgeous already, sporting a pixelated, retro-inspired look. But on the Wii U, the HD visuals are even more pleasing to the eye, resembling a vibrant cartoon. And it’s absolutely worth mentioning the game’s amazing soundtrack by Jake “virt” Kaufman. One of this game’s highlights is the incredibly catchy soundtrack; as Duke pointed out in his review, you can download the soundtrack on Mr. Kaufman’s site.
The controls on the GamePad are very comfortable and easy to get used to, with the latter being particularly nice in a game requiring such precise timing. The action takes place on your TV screen, with the GamePad screen showing a radar that indicates nearby prisoners, as well as your life meter, and so forth. The game supports Miiverse with its own, dedicated community, and it does support Off TV Play, an excellent feature that is always welcome in Wii U games.
The core gameplay is completely intact, so nothing was lost from the transition between the 3DS and Wii U. The game still gets as difficult as ever. The five levels added to Mighty Switch Force! on the 3DS via DLC are already included here, unlocked after clearing the main game. And in addition to the new high-def look and GamePad controls, the game includes new “Hyper Drive” levels. Also unlocked upon completion of the game, the aforementioned levels are remastered versions of the 16 levels of the main campaign. These are nice for extra replay value, and those who’ve played through the 3DS version will certainly appreciate these new challenges as well. As an added touch, the Hyper Drive levels have remixed tunes too.
Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition is a fantastic title on the Wii U eShop. If you’re looking for a tough but entertaining puzzle-platformer, this is a must-own, even if you’ve played through the 3DS version.
