Bench Test: Sonic R

Sonic R is a racing game originally released on the Sega Saturn. It’s been released on a few other platforms since then, including an appearance on the compilation Sonic Gems Collection. This is not Sonic’s first foray in the racing genre; there were a couple of kart-racers featuring Sonic on the Game Gear. And since this game was released, Sonic has appeared in other racing titles too, including the Sonic Riders series and the multi-platform Sonic & All-Stars Racing series.

Arguably known more for its catchy soundtrack, Sonic R is a different type of racing game than, for example, Mario Kart. With the exception of two racers, everyone races on foot. Besides aiming for first place, there is also a bit of an exploration/adventure element to the game, as there’s some collectibles on each track, as well as shortcuts.

In this episode of Bench Test, recorded by Duke, we’re taking a look at Sonic R in its entirety!
